Gopniya

Gopniya is the perfect place to save your secrets.

Save your passwords, bank details, insurance policies, property papers and private letters in Gopniya. Everything is encrypted on your device, and we cannot read it. The one exception is what you set aside for the people you name, which we can open only at handover.

If you stop using Gopniya for a period you choose, we deliver what you set aside to the people you named, online or in person, after checking each person’s identity.

We sign a contract with you that binds us to do this.

Custody agreement

  1. Everything you store is encrypted on your device. We can open only what you set aside for handover, and only after your inactivity period has passed.
  2. If you are inactive for the period you set, we deliver only what you chose, and only to the people you named.
  3. We deliver only after checking each nominee’s identity, online or in person.
  4. If a handover is disputed or blocked, we resolve it, through the courts if necessary. Your family does not have to bring the case.
  5. We cannot weaken this agreement without your signature.

Gopniya signs a contract with you

When you sign up, you and Gopniya both sign the custody agreement. It lists everything we owe you. We cannot change it without your signature.

  • Our responsibility remains valid even if you stop paying. You can no longer add new secrets or open the ones you saved until you pay again. They stay stored, and the handover still happens.
  • A change that takes anything away from you applies only after you sign it. If you never sign, your version stays in force.
  • An independent trustee holds a continuity reserve. If Gopniya stops growing, the reserve pays to run the service, so every handover still happens. Gopniya cannot draw on it.
  • Fees for in-person handovers are held by the trustee until the handover is delivered or the fee is refunded. They are not used to run the company.
  • If we shut down, your handover passes to a named successor bound by the same terms.
  • If we fail to meet a commitment, that is a breach of contract. You, your nominees and your legal heirs can enforce it.

Gopniya delivers your secrets to the people you choose

You choose a period, from 30 days to 3 years. If you do not use Gopniya for that long, we start the handover. Using Gopniya at any time resets the period. No death certificate is needed.

  1. We remind you

    By default, once you have been inactive for 30 days, we remind you every week by email and SMS. Tapping “I’m still here” stops the process.

  2. We warn you

    Seven days before the handover date, we tell you exactly what will go to whom.

  3. We find your nominees

    We use the details you gave us, and a tracing agency if needed. They are told nothing while you are active.

  4. We verify them

    Online, through DigiLocker and a live face match. Or in person, where two of our staff check their original ID and record the visit.

  5. They receive what you left them

    Online, as a private download. In person, in a sealed envelope, as printed pages and a USB drive, as you choose. It holds nothing you left for anyone else.

You can set the handover anywhere from 30 days to 3 years. Using Gopniya on any day returns you to day 0.

Inactive is not the same as dead

Gopniya acts on inactivity. Inactive means you have not used Gopniya or answered a reminder for the period you set. It does not mean you have died, and Gopniya does not try to find out.

So a handover can happen while you are alive, for example during a long stay in hospital. If you expect to be away, choose a longer period before you go. If you use Gopniya again before a nominee receives what you left them, that handover stops. What has already been delivered cannot be taken back.

Each folder, document, note or password can go to a different person. Each person receives only what you left for them.

Gopniya cannot read your secrets before a handover

Gopniya encrypts everything in your browser before it leaves your device, including file names. Our servers store only encrypted data. What you set aside for handover is sealed so that it can be opened at handover and at no other time.

No one person can open a handover
Opening one requires our hardware security module and two of three staff security keys. It is possible only after your inactivity period has passed, and every step is logged.
Only what you mark for handover can be opened
Everything else in your vault stays readable by you alone.
Using the app cancels a handover
If you open the app before a nominee receives what you left them, that handover stops.

Gopniya handles every complication

If a handover envelope is lost, a nominee is a minor or has died, or the family disagrees, your family calls one number. Gopniya opens a case, verifies them in person and resolves it, in court if necessary.
